Badgerlore began when Rob Fisk (now of Common Eider, King Eider and original co-founder of Deerhoof [along with Greg Saunier]) moved to Humboldt County in 1996. Originally inspired by the slow moving guitar constructions of bands like White Wing Moth and the clatter improv of K-Salvatore and AMM, the band features mostly improvisatory music with Rob Fisk’s affinity for titles featuring animals. Ben and Rob met in 1996 when Deerhoof played a show in Eureka with Ben’s band. At that time Rob had dreads of the crust core variety. He quickly cut them off and became clean shaven once he moved to Humboldt.

After recording Of Things To Sorrowful To Be Reminded Of And Things Too Beautiful To Possess in Ben’s basement room in Santa Cruz, Tom Carter (Charalambides) and Pete Swanson (Yellow Swans) joined the band to release Stories For Owls, on Fisk’s Free Porcupine Society label.

Glenn Donaldson (Der TPK), and Liz Harris (Grouper) joined the band for the next album, We Are All Hopeful Farmers, We Are All Scared Rabbits, released on the Table Of The Elements subsidiary, Xeric. The band is currently mixing songs for a new record and has been doing so for the last 5 years.
